Many networks have grown organically. An efficient and structured design is the basis for a future-proof network. The aim of such a design is to ensure the necessary performance for the future and to keep the complexity of the network manageable.
Design and operation of the high-performance network
For the network of SciCORE, the scientific high-performance computing center of the University of Basel, workshops on the new design and implementation were carried out. It is important to estimate the traffic flow, visualize the network and define its nodes. On this basis, the network was set up, specific tasks were automated and continuous monitoring of the network was implemented. In addition, there is a change in the high-performance storage solution - from Infiniband (QDR) with RDMA to Ethernet 100GbE with RoCE v2 (RDMA over Converged Ethernet).
Replacement of switching infrastructure with significant cost savings
The infrastructure for the management and deployment network was also replaced as part of the project. The implementation with our specifically configured MikroTik hardware enabled us to achieve significant cost savings (factor 1 to 7) compared to conventional manufacturers.
